The United States Power Squadron (USPS) was formed in 1914 as an organization dedicated to the interest of sailors, power boaters, paddlers  and the promotion of fun, safe boating. USPS has nearly 40,000 members across the country and in several US territories. USPS is the world’s largest private, non profit boating organization.

Bluegrass Sail & Power Squadron is one of over 400 local Squadrons which make up USPS. Bluegrass Sail & Power Squadron was chartered in 1971 in Lexington, Kentucky. Today our headquarters remains in Lexington while our membership comes from throughout Kentucky.

Bluegrass Sail & Power Squadron offers its members all of the benefits of USPS membership and more. Our members have access to USPS’s nationally recognized educational courses and seminars.  Members use the knowledge gained in these courses and seminars to promote fun and safe boating to all boaters. USPS members may also qualify for discounts on their boat insurance. Participation in community events allows our members to “give back” to their communities. The Squadron also sponsors many social events throughout the year, including several on the water events.  Many members take advantage of low cost Squadron sponsored cruises to the Chesapeake Bay, the British Virgin Islands, the Bahamas and canal boat trips through the English countryside, as well as cruises and raft offs on lakes and rivers throughout Kentucky.

Bluegrass Sail & Power Squadron offers a full line of courses and seminars. Everything from reading nautical charts to using a GPS and a sextant are available to members. USPS’s America Boating Course is offered to the general public. The ABC course as it is popularly known is an introductory boating course intended to teach novice boaters the basics of boats, boat handling and boating safety. The ABC course satisfies Kentucky’s requirements that children under the age of 18  must successfully complete a safe boating course in order to operate any type of powerboat on Kentucky waterways. Many insurance companies offer discounts on boat insurance to people who have successfully completed the ABC course.
